Say what you think the author is trying to do or say. What is the author's main message or purpose? Say how well you think the author succeeds in what he or she is attempting and give reasons for your answer.
In my Opinion, the author is trying to tell a story, which turns out to be a very surprised one. He starts the story with a happy mood and try to show that everything is fine. Afterwards the author tries to increase the tension with every page. And it worked. The author is trying to show us, how things in life can change in one moment. He tries to convince the reader that good doings are very important to "save" your fellows. By doing just bad things ( what the characters done in the story ) you destroy other lifes and at the end you also feel guilty. That shouldn't be so. With the Inspector i think he tries to refer to the guiltily. He also wants to show that several events of several people can be related to a bad thing.

well-bred : i thought it is a kind of politness, but acutally it means having good manners.
infirmary : i thought it is a kind of emergency station, but it is a name given to hospitals.
leading operator: i thought it is a leading position, but it is a foreman.
excuse: i thought it is a apology, but it is a justification
